      3. Emergence and evolution of organic synthesis and total synthesis. The development of experimental methods for practical chemistry and the discoveries of naturally occurring substances such as urea, quinine, morphine and strychnine in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries laid the foundations and provided the impetus for the emergence of organic synthesis []. Using illustrative examples from the recent literature as a framework, this review provides an introduction to the design and application of free radical reactions for use in organic synthesis. While a few non-chain reactions are discussed, the primary focus is on four of the most important and versatile methods to conduct radical chain reactions.

Organic Synthesis: Strategy and Control is written by Paul Wyatt (Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies, School of Chemistry, University of Bristol, UK) and Stuart Warren (Reader in Organic Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK) and published by John Wiley and Sons Ltd. in The book is intended for that very audience final year .   The subject of this book is a core constituent of undergraduate chemistry courses. developments, and emphasizes the basic principles of the subject which remain essentially unchanged. Two new chapters on selenium reagents and asymmetric synthesis have been added.4/5(1).
